How are you coming along with your new year’s resolutions? For many, those goals have to do with healthy eating, fitness or losing weight — perhaps even all three. A study from the UK recently found that nearly two-thirds of people ditch their New Year’s resolutions within one month. Why? Because lofty goals are too challenging to sustain over time. Everyone has high expectations and wants instant results – but it takes time and effort to make your best self.

Patience and consistency are keys to success, as are enjoyable exercises. Fortunately for Harbor Club residents and members, there are tons of fun options available for getting fit – and for keeping your new year’s resolutions for longer than one month. Consider these:

Barre and Toning

Taught by fitness instructor Mauren Brower (aka “Mo”) since 2017, this fitness class continues to be popular. Inspired by ballet techniques, it focuses on isometric strength training to develop long, lean muscle without bulking up. The class is offered at The Grove Fitness Center on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-9 AM.

Core classes

Core classes are designed to work the core muscle group while improving posture and increasing flexibility through exercises that strengthen the abdomen and back muscles. Mo teaches Core class on Tuesdays from 8-8:45 AM. She also offers a Men’s Core for Golf class on Monday mornings from 8-8:45 AM. Both classes are taught at The Grove Fitness Center.

Yoga

Yoga is an excellent way to gain both strength and flexibility. It includes controlled breathing, simple meditation, and specific postures that increase blood flow to your muscles. Taught by Page, yoga classes are on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9-10 AM in the downstairs fitness room at The Clubhouse.

NEW! Strength and Conditioning

This brand new class taught by Mo offers exercises that specifically target the entire body utilizing a variety of traditional, functional, and strength training routines. You’ll build strength, tone muscle, shed fat, and burn calories. Give it a try on Tuesdays at The Grove Fitness Center from 9-10 AM.

Jazzercise

A blend of “jazz” and “exercise,” Jazzercise combines aerobic exercise, high-intensity interval training, cardio, and dance. It’s safe and effective for all ages and fitness levels. Charlotte teaches this addictively fun, heart-pumping class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9-10 AM at The Grove Fitness Center.

Play golf

Believe it or not, the game of golf offers many health benefits. As you play, you’ll be walking, bending, stretching, and swinging (clubs.) Plus, our Lake Oconee golf course offers a variety of terrains and elevations that add some challenge (and fun) to your game. Contact us to book a tee time and get your body moving.

Play pickleball

Due to its popularity, Harbor Club now offers multiple pickleball courts for enjoying this fun, low-impact sport. Play gets your blood pumping with combined elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Get the scoop on pickleball and choose a group play time from the schedule below:

Ladies: Tuesday and Friday, 9 AM – 12 PM

Men: Tuesday and Thursday, 3 PM – 6 PM

Co-ed: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, 10 AM – 12 PM and Sunday 2 PM – 4 PM

Couples: Sunday, 4 PM – 7 PM

Exercise at The Grove

Would you prefer to create your own fitness routine? We offer several options at The Grove. There you’ll have access to a wide array of options, including top-notch cardio machines, weight-training equipment, a quarter-mile track, a sports field, a Fit-Trail® with 10 fitness stations for stretching, bending, and strength-training, and more.

Other exercise options…

Harbor Club also offers tennis, cycling, croquet, a community garden, and a junior Olympic-sized pool. There are also 27 miles of well-maintained roads in our secure, gated community — perfect for biking, running, jogging, and walking.

So if you’re ready to keep your new year’s resolutions for getting fit, try one (or many) of the options above. Create a routine that you enjoy, and stick to it. It takes 21 days to form a new habit. At Harbor Club, you can make fitness fun — and soon enough, you’ll see the results of your efforts. Cheers to a happy and healthy you in 2022.
